Our client in New Britain, Connecticut is seeking a Firewall Engineer. 

Our client requires a firewall engineer with 3+ years of experience and good interpersonal skills. The candidate will be expected to read FireWall ACLs, evaluate traffic patterns to/from hosts, talk to server owners, and submit tickets through ServiceNow to make necessary firewall changes. 

The candidate will follow the process to establish egress control:

  1. Narrow the scope of the problem
    1. Disable idle and redundant rules
    2. Block output NTP, NDS (except approved recursive resolvers), and SMB.
  2. Run a fresh egress report from Q-Radar
    1. Group by originating host
    2. Sort by number of outbound sessions
    3. For each originating host
      1. If it is a server
        • Create explicit ‘allow’ rules to permit the outbound traffic
        • Create a ‘deny’ rule to block other outbound ports from that server (temporary)
        • Identify the server owner as the owner of the new rules
        • Inform the server owner
      2. If it is a workstation, contact Infrastructure Service Operations to determine whether the traffic is expected
        • If it is, create explicit ‘allow’ rules to permit that traffic from workstation IP ranges and a ‘deny’ rule to block other ports. 
        • If not, create an incident from SOC investigation
    4. After working through all host, create an explicit “allow any outbound” rule at the bottom of the rules stack. Monitor this rule for additional egress traffic and handle as a Step 3.
    5. After the “allow any outbound” rule that has been idle for 6 months, replace with a “deny any outbound” Remove any explicit ‘deny rules created in Step 3.
